Is this tweet by Narendra Modi when he won, the most Retweeted one?

On 16th May 2009 at 12.09 PM Narendra Modi the then PM candidate of BJP and now to-be sworn in PM tweeted that India has Won. He is the first person to who was born after independence to become PM. This elections set  records in many ways. The live tweet is embedded below.

When Barack Obama was re-elected his social media team sent out a tweet which Govpreneur covered. The tweet is embedded below.

While he is social media savvy Narendra Modi still has a long way to go in making retweet records. Going forward we can see many more historic moments on twitter. May you live in interesting times.

Facebook Profile or Page – When to use What in a Government Social Media Campaign

Oh! we are having this conference/event/campaign in our office and this time we want to use social media to reach more people. If this is a thought you have ever had in your mind, chances are that you next thought creating a social media campaign. Facebook is what comes to mind when you think of a social media campaign. The purpose of using social media is to connect and engage with your client. In a government setting the clients may be anyone who comes to avail a service in your department/agency or the public at large.

Last year around this time I was preparing to make a campaign to use social media to reach out to Youth Voter in the Gujarat 2012 elections. The aim was to go where your target audience was (read Facebook) and speak their language to connect and exort them to Vote in the elections. The dilemma i faced was to decide whether i should create a facebook profile or page for the campaign.

When to Create a facebook page

For situations like this a Facebook Page is a more appropriate choice. The Facebook terms also mention that you cannot use your personal timeline for commercial purpose. A facebook page provides some facilities that will help you achieve your campaign objectives of connecting and engaging with citizens viz.

Like Buttons –  Available only on facebook pages and its unlimited. For example visitors cannot like your profile but can only add as a friend. Friend connections in profiles are limited to 5000 per profile.

Apps – Apps provide additional functionalities like surveys, contests, games and a million possibilities for engagement. A profile can use an app but cannot host it. For example the famous FarmVille game is actually an app that you use on a facebook page.

Gating – Facebook pages provide gating functionality which help in showing specific content to people based on whether they have liked your page or not.

Page Management Roles – An FB page provides roles for multiple people to manage it. You can delegate roles like Page Manager, Content Creator, Moderator, Advertiser and Insights Analyst to other team members who can create posts/manage the page.

Page Insights – An FB page provides insights on likes, reach and people talking about this etc through simple graphs. This will help in estimating the campaign traffic and performance monitoring.

FB page Management Tips:

  • You can get a fancy name like www.facebook.com/my-campaign-name once you reach 30 likes.
  • Content posted on a page is public and viewable by anyone who can view the page.

While all this is cool there are a few things about a facebook profile that you need to keep in mind. An FB page can be created only by a profile. A page cannot be created independently. In a Government setting it will be better to create an official profile to manage all these pages and apps. Problems may arise if pages are created under personal profiles and the concerned person is transferred. It is also wiser to create a dedicated email id for such web initiatives. There is a lot to talk on that. But thats for another day : )

Now go make a splash on FB and share it with us here in comments.

#ModiHangout – A short Twitter analysis

Gujarat CM Narendra  Modi became the third political leader in the world to do a Google+ Hangout. It was a well managed event with building up of adequate buzz by taking questions from public at large. The event was anchored by Ajay Devgan which added the needed blitz to the event. Mr. Narendra Modi a star in his own right doesn’t need a cine star to pep up a show. However Ajay helped in keeping the flow of the hangout. Many local TV channels got into the fray by live telecasting the hangout video right from their computers with all the pauses when the video was being buffered by the computer. Who said that what happens in the internet will remain only in the cyber space.

The tweets started pouring in and the official stats have been released in Narendra Modi’s website.

Lessons for Officers

Your Boss knows better –

Dont lag behind, learn and explore

Social Media – Love it or hate it but do learn it

You are no more the channel for information, its d2c now – Direct to Citizens.

Dont just follow your office orders, follow then in social media also.

To Social or Not to Social is the Question

Narendra modi Google plus hangout

Just an hour ago Gujarat CM Narendra Modi becomes the third leader in the world to do a Google Plus after Barack Obama and Julia Gillard. Its easy to dismiss this as just a technology fad or race to take a place in technology history.

The internet has evolved from just being a medium to view information to a platform to connect with people and now to engage with your constituents.

Every leader is an engager. Whether you are leading a group of people in an private organization, non-profit or a government organization you can’t lead without engagement. Influence by position is out, influence by trust is in. Trust is generated by being genuine, original and engaging. It means building a relationship. It is the trust in the relationship that converts to influence.

Online channels and social media present an opportunity for every individual to be genuine, original and engaging. It helps you to be deal with mass communication and personal engagement at the same time.

Social media presents an opportunity and a challenge. Communicating through social media is still a basic human expression. It provides a chance to engage with your tribe on a closer level at the same time it comes with the challenge of managing the dynamics of virality to positive effect.

Social media is a tool. It becomes good or bad depending on the purpose for which it is used. It is not a microphone to shout meaningless noise. Rather it is a tool to provide a service/value to your target audience.

Creating a facebook page or a twitter handle is not the thing. Its what you do with it that matters.
